Greek Theatre in Los Angeles, CA — August 15, 2024

On Thursday night at the Greek Theatre, The Japanese House delivered an ethereal and captivating performance, perfectly matched by the intimate energy of co-headliner, Del Water Gap. Del Water Gap set the tone with his blend of indie rock and soulful melodies, warming up the crowd with hits like “Ode to a Conversation Stuck in Your Throat” and “Coping on Unemployment,” leaving the audience swaying and singing along. Frontman S. Holden Jaffe brought a raw, heartfelt energy to the stage, connecting with the audience through his earnest lyrics and dynamic stage presence.

As the lights dimmed for The Japanese House, a serene anticipation filled the air. Amber Bain took the stage, enveloping the venue in her signature dreamy soundscapes. Tracks like “Still” and “Follow My Girl” resonated deeply, with Bain’s delicate vocals weaving through layers of lush synths, guitars and saxaphone. The set was both nostalgic and forward-looking, showcasing songs from her latest album, In the End It Always Does, while also revisiting fan favorites from her earlier work. The Greek Theatre’s open-air setting amplified the immersive experience, with the band’s dynamic lighting and visuals adding to the atmospheric vibe. The show was a testament to The Japanese House’s evolution, as Bain effortlessly commanded the stage, blending vulnerability with a quiet confidence that kept the audience entranced from start to finish. Halfway through the set a special guest appeared to join Amber on stage. Katie Gavin from the band MUNA joined onstage to singe “Morning Pages”, and then once more at the end of the night to sing, as Amber described, “the best song ever written”. A tune newly written by Katie Gavin titled “Inconsolable”. The night closed with a sense of wistful satisfaction, leaving fans with a lingering afterglow of the beautiful soundscape they had just witnessed.
