Kaaboo Del Mar

What more could you want than a music festival in sunny San Diego, overlooking the beach, right at the end of summer? Del Mar, California’s KAABOO is set to host their fourth year of the annual music, comedy, food and arts festival (watch out, Coachella!) from September 14th – 16th. With artists ranging from Katy Perry to Imagine Dragons, Halsey, Quinn XCII and Post Malone, one would think this event’s demographic would be mainly today’s youth. However, KAABOO heavily caters to the “oldies” genre with performers like Blondie, Earth, Wind & Fire, and headliner Robert Plant, of Led Zepplin. Tickets start at $249 for the 3-Day Pass, while the 1-Day passes, which normally go on sale closer to the event, are a little more than half that price. // Photo by Dillon Matthew.

In what seemed like a blink of an eye, Halsey has risen to be one of alt-pop’s biggest names. Since releasing her debut album, Badlands in 2015 she has also released a second album titled “Hopeless Fountain Kingdom”, been on numerous world tours, sold out arenas, and created chart-topping singles with artists like G-Eazy and The Chainsmokers. From songs like “Bad at Love” to “Colors” and “Closer”, Halsey will truly put on a show. // Photo by Zoey Grossman.

If there is one artist on KAABOO’s lineup this year that would be amazing to see during sunset, it would be Quinn XCII. His smooth vocals and indie-pop style provides for the perfect setting to get your groove on. Check out his most recent album, The Story of Us here! // Photo by Drew Kirsch.

From having one of his first collaborations with pop superstar Justin Bieber on the track “Déjà Vu”, Post Malone quickly made a name for himself since the release of his debut, and only, album, Stoney at the end of 2016. Although he is primarily known as a rapper, his alternative side is also shown in songs like “I Fall Apart” and his feature in the “Homemade Dynamite [Remix]” by Lorde. His set list will include emotional ballads along with songs that get the crowd jumping. Post is definitely a young, new artist to check out. // Photo by Erik Madigan Heck.

I remember the 21st night of September, do you? Earth, Wind & Fire doesn’t even need an introduction, but here is one anyway. Formed in 1969, this R&B/Soul band has some incredible hits that will definitely keep you on your feet! Be sure to catch up on songs like “Let’s Groove”, “Shining Star”, and “September” from their greatest hits album before the show. Bands like this cross the boundary of a modern festival and make KAABOO what it is! // Photo from Michael Ochs Collection.

If you thought that Imagine Dragons peaked after the release of their first album in 2012 (which included gargantuan hits like “Radioactive” and “Demons”), think again because this four-man band is back with their third record, Evolve. As a KAABOO headliner, you know that their performance will be as powerful as “Thunder”, no pun intended. Be ready for some pyrotechnics and some awesome visuals because this is one act you won’t want to miss. // Photo by Unknown.

“One Way or Another”, you’re going to want to see Blondie this year at KAABOO. If you’re feeling nostalgic about your time in the 80s, or you completely missed the 80s, like myself, this is your chance to escape to a different time period and boogie for a bit. However, this will not simply be a greatest hits show, for Blondie put out a rocking new album titled Pollinator last year. It definitely plays tribute to their roots, but with producing help from artists like Sia and Charli XCX the album has a modern twist.
