Esther Zynn (EZ) is a woman of many talents. When she’s not starring in Nickelodeon show The Other Kingdom, she’s working on her upcoming EP. Local Wolves recently caught up with the actress and singer-songwriter to ask her what we can expect from the release and how acting has impacted her life.

Have you always known you wanted a career in acting?

EZ – It’s weird but yes. I remember specifically knowing that I wanted to be on TV when I was around 6 years old. I started doing school plays and community theatre when I was 11 and that’s when I really fell in love with it.

You’re currently staring in “The Other Kingdom” on Nickelodeon. Could you tell us a little bit about the show and your character on it?

EZ – The Other Kingdom is about my character Astral, a fairy Princess who lives in a magical kingdom but longs to know what it is like to be a human. She gets to live her dream and live in the human world as a regular teenage girl for 90 days. During her journey she learns about friendship, crushes and has to navigate all the nuances and struggles that come with being a teenage girl.

What were some of your favorite Nickelodeon shows growing up?

I loved iCarly and Jimmy Neutron.

How has getting a job at Nickelodeon impacted your life?

EZ – Personally, it hasn’t changed a lot. I still have the same friends and do the same things. Professionally, it gave me exposure as an actress on a scale which I’ve never had before, which is exciting. It also made me more aware of the messages the projects I do send, so I’m a lot more picky with the acting projects I now choose to work on.

As well as acting, you’re also passionate about music. What are some of your first memories of it?

EZ – My dad is a classical violinist and violin teacher so my first experience with music was listening to him play.

You’re currently working on an upcoming EP. What’s the inspiration behind it? What are some of the main themes on the record?

EZ – I am! Everything I write is inspired by my own experiences. I’ve found myself writing about my first time really falling for someone, living in New York City and LA, cutting out negative people in my life. I’ m still in the process of writing so I’m constantly discovering new themes. You mentioned you are inspired by acts like Fiona Apple and LCD Sound System.

What other bands and artists do you listen to?

EZ – I listen to almost every genre and am always on the lookout for new songs and artists to get into. Recently I have been loving Jon Bellion, Yuna, Tove Lo, Florence and The Machine, and K. Flay.

Finally, what advice would you give to young people who are hoping to work in the acting or music industry?

EZ – On the acting front, take every opportunity you have to act and improve, get involved in community theatre, school plays, and sign up for good classes. So much of the music industry is about collaborating so surround yourself with other people who are also creating music and never be afraid of collaborating with them. Lastly support and lift up your friends who are in the same industry as you or even “competing against you”. I heard the quote “blowing out someone’s candle doesn’t make yours burn any brighter” and I really try to live by that.
