Music

From creating music in a small town in Texas, to making the move to Los Angeles, and touring with one of the most influential artists of all time, it’s no surprise GROVES (G) is popping up on everyone’s radar.

How did you guys come to form the group we all know now as GROVES?

G – After many years of playing music together in other projects in Texas, we felt the urge to move out to Los Angeles and create something brand new. We wrote a bunch of songs in the living room of our old house in Eagle Rock, a suburb in East LA and GROVES was born.

What’s the transition been like from practicing music in Texas, to now traveling the country playing music to huge crowds?

G – It’s been a very crazy and wild ride. This transition is something we will never forget. It’s not a very normal thing to go from playing smaller clubs to opening for an icon all over the US in a matter of months. We only had four days to prepare for the tour so it was a very spontaneous time for us. We’ve learned so much by just jumping out there for seven weeks and going after it.

How has getting this amazing opportunity to tour with someone as legendary as Boy George, influenced the way you guys will proceed to create music?

G – When you tour with an iconic band that has sold more than 150 million albums you sort of psychologically are motivated to push yourself to new boundaries musically. We just want to write the best music we possibly can right now and we feel very driven to do that.

What have you guys learned by getting to meet Boy George, front man of Culture Club?

G – Variety is the spice of life and being yourself is the greatest one thing you can accomplish.

Do each of you have pretty similar musical interests or would you say you’re a fair blend of each others own personal taste?

G – Absolutely both. We definitely have our own interests but all share a respect for a lot of the same music. We’re into everything from classic Rock, to the bands from the New Romantic era in the 80’s, to Alternative and Metal. Also Hip Hop and a lot of Pop/R&B influence us. We also find inspiration in other areas like Sci-Fi, space, and film.

Taking inspiration from groups we all know and love such as Elvis Costello, Phoenix, Blink-182 and The Beatles, are there any new artists that you guys have been loving at the moment?

G – Tame Impala and Parquet Courts put out some great music recently. Also the new Grouplove album is dope and we really dig “Heathens” by Twenty One Pilots.

This upcoming year is going to be huge for you guys. Is there another groups you predict are going to blow up that our readers should be on the lookout for?

G – Our buds in Bad Suns just released a new album that we expect to do great things.

Each of you guys are wearing headphones before a set… what are each of you listening to?

SS – “Kashmir” by Led Zeppelin.

WS – “Dazz” by Brick.

RG – “The Next Episode” by Dr. Dre.

After you guys finish touring, what should we expect to see from GROVES?

G – Since we got back from the Culture Club tour we started immediately in the studio wrapping up our first body of music, a seven song EP. We will announce the title and some more information shortly. So definitely be expecting new music asap and more videos for sure. And also a ton more shows, coming to an area near you soon.

When should we be on the lookout for your debut album?

G – We have enough songs recorded for an album but it just keeps growing. After we release the EP we will know more, but we’re aiming for a 2017 release.
